Resolution to end deforestation -DISCUSSION-

The Government of Baelgaria proposes that we enact a resolution to end the deforestation that is going on. The deforestation must stop!

Enact "Forest Protection"
Resolution SS#006
Proposed by: President Stethos
Description: A resolution to protect and preserve the environment
Argument: There has been deforestation going on to make way for man-made structures. This must stop! We need to protect the beauty and serenity of this great region!
AWKNOWLEDGING That the lumber industry needs to cut down trees.
BELIEVING That regenerative forestry and less clear-cutting can keep the lumber industry in place
NOTING That many corporate or industrial parties will reject this due to limiting their growth.
BELIEVING that they can find land that is not home to thousands of native species.
The Sermo Senate hereby enacts resolution #006, "Forest Protection"

On an national level, I support this. I don't believe we can implement this region wide though.

Floozania's official standing on SS#006 - AGAINST
Floozania's forest regions have proven to be a gem to the country, harboring high deposits of uranium. We are aware of the environmental concern, and the deforestation is kept to a minimum while stile mining as much uranium as possible. But the mined Uranium is going towards nuclear power plants being set up in urban regions that supply electricity to our people, and have plans to make uranium exportation the prime economic focus in the near future. To stop deforestation and halt uranium mining would be against Floozania's best interests.

To actually enforce this resolution would be difficult but the Machiniosan senate does like the idea of this. Reckless deforestation harms not only regions but whole continents.

This should be a no-brainer.
These plants and animals have much more of a right to be there than we do. Our species is but a tiny dot on the timescale of these beautiful, grand beings.
They have been there for much longer than us. Uranium or no uranium, that is their land and any culling of these wonderful creatures should be considered an invasion just as much as if we were to attack Hippostania tomorrow.
Killing trees on this land is murder. Killing animals is murder. Frenzland will not stand for any nation who will willingly sacrifice the lives of other living beings for the sake of money.

Hippostania fully supports this proposal. We do our best to protect our pristine beaches, beautiful rainforests, wonderful pine forests on mountains that reach toward the sky and huge grassy plains. These areas must be kept in the same condition as they were thousands of years ago. But of course we must allow an occasional highway or maglev track to be built in these areas.

As long as any constructions are OVER and not THROUGH the forest area, and that the construction does not harm or damage the trees in any way, Frenzland does not object.

If you are not willing to spare the slaughter of the trees in your construction projects perhaps you could at least consider having them safely replanted.

The Avin Triumvirate understands the reasoning behind this, yet we do not believe it is a sufficient reason to entirely remove areas of land from the national economy. While the issues of carbon-storage, biodiversity and as yet unclassified species within some more exotic regions might be an issue, these can be dealt with via specific action rather than issuing a blanket over every forest, be it a single-species plantation, a climax community akin to any found throughout the nation, or a site of special scientific interest.
We thus would rather see protection provided where due, instead of hastily sealing off every remote clump of trees.
