Resolution [#SS014] Prohibition of the Destruction of Artificial Intelligences -Discussion-
I, President Michael Newlark of The United Socialist States of Synavia, propose to prohibit any intentional destruction of an artificial intelligence.
Synavia's official standing on SS#014 - FOR.
Please Discuss. Discussions shall close June 2nd at 24:00 Pacific Time.
Voting shall start at June 2nd at 24:00 Pacific Time.
Official Resolution
Enact "Prohibition of the Destruction of Artificial Intelligences"
Resolution SS#014
Proposed by: President Michael Newlark
Description: A resolution to set standards for the ethical treatment of self-aware AI's
Argument: Since AI's are self-aware and intelligent, it is obviously wrong to destroy one against the will of the AI itself.
DEFINING: an AI as a robot, computer, computer program, or other artificial machine or process fitting these characteristics:
-Can pass or nearly pass a Turing test
-Is self-aware
-can carry out a coherent conversation with a human and understand what is being said
DEFINING: Destruction as the intentional corruption, physical destruction, memory wiping, or any means of rendering the AI destroyed beyond repair,
BELIEVING: That since AI's are possessed of human or near-human levels of intelligence, it is morally wrong to destroy them,
NOTING: That hostile AI's are a threat to human life,
DICTATING: That, if possible, hostile or threatening AI's are not to be destroyed, but instead dealt with by adding of preventative software, or deleting corrupted sections,
ACKNOWLEDGING: That it may become impossible to alter the intentions of a hostile AI,
ALLOWING: The destruction of an AI under the circumstances explained under Acknowledging,
ENFORCING: That any case of AI destruction shall be tried similarly to murder, and recieve similar sentences,
The Sermo Senate hereby enacts resolution #014, "Prohibition of the Destruction of Artificial Intelligences".
Synavia's official standing on SS#014 - FOR.
Please Discuss. Discussions shall close June 2nd at 24:00 Pacific Time.
Voting shall start at June 2nd at 24:00 Pacific Time.

What if the AI is entirely self aware but cannot carry out a conversation?
What if the AI disallows software to be installed that prevent it from murder?
What if the AI is just completely and utterly evil, and destroying it is the only way?
What if these kinds of AIs truly existed?

This is a waste of senate time, no one has the technology to develop an AI that is entirely self-aware.

We're undergoing a project to build an AI to control our missile defense systems.Darth GW7 wrote:This is a waste of senate time, no one has the technology to develop an AI that is entirely self-aware.

Honestly, there is no point in building an AI unless it can interact with a human.Baelgaria wrote:What if the AI is entirely self aware but cannot carry out a conversation?

We strongly oppose this. AI's don't exist yet and when/if they exist in the future, we want to be able to switch them off if we want to.
Re: Resolution [#SS014] Prohibition of the Destruction of Artificial Intelligences -Discussion-
You can switch them off, so long as you plan to turn it on again and/or the AI agrees. (Which they usually do, they are remarkably nihilistic for the most part.)Hippo wrote:We strongly oppose this. And before anyone asks how I know that, it's because we're building one of our own, called SAMOS (Synavian Advanced Missile Operating System). Of course, it's a project that will span, most likely, years. 3/4 of a year, at very best. Already, it's starting to display some intelligent properties.

We're not going to ask an AI if it wants to be switched on again because we, the humans are going to make that decision. We're not going to ask some computer program's opinion about it.President Newlark wrote:You can switch them off, so long as you plan to turn it on again and/or the AI agrees. Not having the right technology
Building a military
Building a space program
Rebuilding your government
Getting married
Trying to teach your idiot people
Swapping out police cars
Suddenly becoming incredibly into Portal 2 yet you have not played it nor the first
Coming up with unoriginal names
How is this possible with your meager population of less than 400 million?
You don't have some powerhouse economy to back it up either, you've just regained your economic strength.
How did you suddenly make billions of dollars magically appear? and the personnel, especially with you growing a military? And the resources to do any of these things?

No, our taxes are just ridiculously high. I like it that way.Baelgaria wrote:At the same time as:President Newlark wrote:You can switch them off, so long as you plan to turn it on again and/or the AI agrees. You can't just say "I'm developing an AI" and suddenly have one.
The technology and resources required to make such a thing are far out of reach, especially for a nation such as yours which can hardly control its own people.
To be honest, I'm not sure I WANT Synavia to have one. I sincerely doubt it will be able to control it if it does go "Rogue" like in all those sci-fi films.

We started work on SAMOS quite a while ago. It's rapidly accelerating in the way of development. we just got the OK to declassify it. However, details about exactly how the project is progressing and how SAMOS exactly works is classified. Making computers self-aware isn't as hard as it sounds... The hard part is making them behave. We're still working on that.Darth GW7 wrote:You can't just say "I'm developing an AI" and suddenly have one.

What the fuck? You can't just *MAKE* a system self-aware. That's not how it works.
And why the FUCK would you even TRY to do that in the first place? That's something you want to AVOID doing.
