The Northern Threat Reduction Initiative

As a result of the recent increase in both military and terrorist activity within Sermo, the Avin Triumvirate and the Ocasian Government have decided to put in place the Northern Threat Reduction Initiative (NTRI) as a defensive measure against both foreign aggression and to provide the capability to detect and destroy any attempted terrorist hijacking attempt mid-flight.



The NTRI aims to protect primarily via a military no-fly-zone imposed across the territories of Ocasus, Gerschbir and Avinistratus. This no-fly zone prevents the penetration of hostile air-forces via a combination of ground-deployed air-defence systems and air-patrols provided by elements of the Avinistratus Air Force operating from prepared bases in Ocasus and Avinistratus.

Civilian traffic transiting the military no-fly zone will be required to follow pre-assigned flight-corridors to ensure inflight safety. Aircraft that deviate from their corridor will be warned of their situation, intercepted via AVAF aircraft, and if they still fail to correct their course, destroyed.

A secondary aim of the Northern Threat Reduction Initiative is to deter the possibility of a attempted orbital assault upon the Northern Hemisphere. As a initial measure, the Triumvirate approved the deployment of 12 Arrow-2 Anti-Ballistic Missile batteries to Ocasus, and 4 THAAD Anti-Ballistic Missile batteries to be deployed to Gerschbir in order to defend the units enforcing NTRI.

The Northern Threat Reduction Initiative provides a barrier against hostile aggression and serves to protect safety amid upper Sermo through aerial security.

I think this is for a good cause, but it simply seems too drastic. Why are airplanes that deviate from their courses only a little bit destroyed, killing all innocents on board? Synavia does not stand for this.

You may need to reread the statement, Synavia. Civilian traffic that deviates from their path will be contacted via radio, then be tailed by fighter jets, and then, as a last resort, be shot down.

You don't seem to be getting it. Terrorists are trying to kill people, so what they'll do is simply stay off course so the plane gets blown up. Makes no sense whatsoever. Put yourself in the position of the terrorists. This doesn't decrease terrorism, it increases it. There'll be a whole new group of niche terrorists specializing in this type of attack.

There will always be terrorists taking over planes. It's not like you can specialize and train for getting blown up in mid air or blowing it up on a ground target and have the training for it be any different.

If it does happen, which it shouldn't, atleast targets on the ground won't be harmed.

Avinistratus Anti-Ballistic Missile Vessels deployed to Ocasus.

Within the terms of the NTRI, the Triumvirate has decided that in order to improve upon the mobile and theatre-based anti-ballistic capabilities within the region, a flotilla of naval vessels with anti-ballistic systems have been positioned within Ocasus.

Task Flotilla 22 consists of six De-Zeven-Provincien-class Air Defence/Command Frigates, each with the capability to intercept and destroy not only inbound ballistic missiles, but also operate as an anti-satellite platform.

De-Zeven-Provincien-class Armaments:

1 x 127mm Oto-Breda Dual-Purpose Gun
2 x 30mm Thales ‘Goalkeeper’ Close In Weapons Systems
2 x 20mm Oerlikon Anti-Aircraft Cannons
2 x Dual-Mounted 324mm Torpedo Tubes, Mk 46 Torpedoes loaded.
2 x Quad-Mounted 101mm Mk 141 Launchers, RGM-84 Harpoon SSMs loaded.
1 x Mk-41 Vertical-Launch-System, 6 x 8 cells.

Current VLS Loadout:

24 x RIM-66 Standard SM2ER Block IIIA.
8 x RIM-161B Standard SM3 Block IA.
8 x RGM-109E TLAM Block IV.
8 x Quad-Packed RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrows, 32 missiles total.

Task Flotilla 22 Deployments:

LCF-12 ANV Longbow – Deployed in Aura, local ABM.
LCF-7 ANV Venator – Deployed in Aura, Rapid Reaction Force.
LCF-31 ANV Duke Berne – Deployed in Aura, Rapid Reaction Force.
LCF-29 ANV Dauntless – Deployed in Aura, Rapid Reaction Force.
LCF-25 ANV Port Garnet – Deployed within Lake Ocasus, local ABM.
LCF-14 ANV Bountiful – Deployed within Lake Ocasus, Gerschbir Reaction Force.

These deployments allow for the ballistic shield to be widened not only within the land-based NTRI, but also along the coast to other countries in the case of hostilities.

Machinosa joins the Northern Threat Reduction Initiative.

After expressing approval of the NTRI, and observing the recent disturbances in the Northern Hemisphere, Machinosa requested and was accepted into the NTRI as the fourth member of our initiative to ensure the protection of Sermo. This decision has been hailed as a step towards a universal air-defence network covering a large percent of Northern Sermo.

While ground-based defensive systems are currently under deployment, three squadrons of AVAF Typhoons with Voyager tanker support and five E-3 Sentries have been deployed to Machinosa to enforce the extended NTRI zone around the country. Over the next few days, the twelve SA-21 SAM batteries which serve to form a perimeter around the NTRI's borders in Machinosa and the twelve Arrow-2 ABM batteries which will defend key-points within Machinosa will be airlifted into the country.
