Rogue virus cripples several Heliostanian networks
Heliostania is currently suffering major attacks from a computer virus of unknown origin.
The virus was first recorded to have infected a few computers at an Ubertech®, one of Heliostania's leading technological corporations. The virus quickly spread throughout their several Local Area Networks, rendering every computer in the office completely inoperable, as well as several prototypes that were not directly connected.
The way it operates is a mystery, however it seems to be capable of searching through computers for IP addresses it later connects to and infects, spreading from computer to computer in an uncontrollable manner.
Vital services have already disconnected all internet services and are barring the use of smart phones or laptops within their buildings in order to prevent hospitals or police departments from being affected, however there have already been several isolated cases where vital databases have been infected, forcing the authorities to cauterize several systems to prevent any contagion.
Heliostania is advising all citizens to sever internet access to prevent their systems being compromised, as the country's specialised cyber crimes units investigates the cause and the cure for this rogue malware.
We will keep you informed as the reports come in; details of the virus' nature are sketchy at best, mostly due to the fact that communications are effectively severed once the virus takes control of any software.

Re: Rogue virus cripples several Heliostanian networks
Before anybody asks, we're pretty darn sure that SAMOS is not the source of these attacks. Although the intelligent way in which it seems to operate is rather interesting...
We'll get our engineers on it right away. We have plenty to spare.

Re: Rogue virus cripples several Heliostanian networks
SAMOS has nothing to do with anything in this thread, what the hell are you on about.
Re: Rogue virus cripples several Heliostanian networks
I thought that some might think that SAMOS is the source of the attacks, which he is not.
I regret to inform you that the virus, or something like it, seems to have spread to Synavia, but not any other Sermoan countries. Our computer scientists are still working on it.

Re: Rogue virus cripples several Heliostanian networks
The virus continues to assail Heliostania's private networks
New details regarding its nature have been obtained as the second day since infection has dawned. Notable networks that have been compromised are IRG.net, Heliosearch.hs (Heliostania's primary search engine), NginProviders.com and Polyprovisions.hs
The companies released statements via telecommunications, announcing that all their networks had been accessed and shut down by the virus, although they stated customers' personal details were safe, and had, in fact, been deleted by the virus itself.
Indeed, it seems the virus' very nature is not to take over networks, but to actively destroy each machine it connects to before moving on to several others.
Before the machine is shut down and effectively destroyed, scripts run from the virus force open many windows and force the spam of "I AM THE NIGHT" with no spaces, repeated again and again until the eventual disconnection.
This has led to the virus being nicknamed "Nighttime" by both citizens and authorities, a name that seems well chosen due to the national state Heliostania has been left in because of it.
Last view of an unknown network. Seconds later, the entire system went down.
One of the virus' other telling traits is its ability to overload all the powersources connected to the machines it infects. As such, any powerstations that are infected are shut down along with its networks, causing frequent blackouts throughout Heliostania's major cities. Thankfully, emergency backup supplies have been isolated from any outside connection and there will be some regular supply of power, however, Heliostania is currently enforcing power rationing to prevent its supply from dwindling. All non-essential power has been barred from use during daytime, which will likely lead to mad rushes when night comes and the restrictions are temporarily lifted.
Reports of foreign infection have been reported but not confirmed in nations such as Synavia, Hippostania, Avinstratus, Baelgaria and the PRSR. Such reports are likely to go unconfirmed for some time due to terminated internet access, however the Heliostanian government has sent emergency messages to many of the sermonian nations warning them to be aware of the threat.

Yes, there has been one case of it in Baelgaria, it was a computer in an R&D department, a passing researcher noticed the spam and quickly isolated the computer completely from any cables. Hopefully no other computers have been infected.

In that case, NightTime is not the virus we're getting, though it seems to be related. Ours somehow breaks through all safeguards and spams the system with commands to do extremely processor-intensive or impossible tasks, such as generating a random number between zero and googol, or dividing by zero. It is unknown how it generates these ordeals.
It is infecting home computers left and right, but the vast majority of our government systems are safe, as we have yet to see a Mac variant of the virus, which has been dubbed "Nilnet", because it seems to love dividing by zero.
It is still unknown if Nilnet is related in any way to NightTime.

"Nighttime" counter-virus in development as infection spreads overnight
Last night was tense for many heliostanian citizens, but despite frequent warnings from the government the power went uninterrupted in all major cities.
There were some expected consequences of the ban of unnecessary power usage during the day, as millions of people simultaneously began making important calls, and some even daring to use internet access to send emails to distant contacts. Unfortunately, the virus was still active and most of these individuals had their systems contaminated as a result.
Meanwhile, it has been announced that the military is co-operating with several electronics firms to create a countervirus capable of preventing any further spread of Nighttime, and hopefully to permanently destroy all data relating to it in order to prevent it from being used again.
There has already been some success, a test run produced some code that managed to hold off the virus for several minutes, giving the researchers enough time to locate the source of the attack and block it off. However, the test machine was infected mere minutes later from another machine which was able to bypass their code.
With power stable and countermeasures being developed, it is possible that Nighttime may have been a one-off attack, albeit a devastating and terrifying one. The consequences of these past few days have yet to be seen, as millions of terrabytes of data have been lost forever.

Re: Rogue virus cripples several Heliostanian networks
Synavia has not had any success with Nilnet. The main problem is that it attacks so quickly. We are still not sure if it is a file or self-erasing code that is stored in the RAM. We are inclined to think that it is the latter, but there is no proof.
Starting later today, our scientists will temporarily disable SAMOS's network firewall, to see if SAMOS can get it. He will be able to analyze it very quickly and attempt to combat it in a variety of different ways.
Synavia would be happy to lend Heliostania SAMOS's "brain"power to combat NightTime, if they so wish.

We do not require further processing power. Our systems are working at maximum capacity and are fully dedicated to producing the necessary countermeasures. We can not provide additional data regarding the cure, as it is restricted information.

I doubt your computers are H/A like SAMOS is, though.

Thing which a pocket calculator can compute? I'm a president, not one of our many scientists.

Argulor has yet to have any reports of this virus spreading to our computer systems.
